Chandubi Lake

Chandubi Lake is a natural lake near Guwahati, at a distance of about 64 kms and easily connected by National Highway 37 on way to Goalpara. Located at the foot of Garo hills surrounded by both Assam and Meghalaya, the lake is calm and peaceful, covered by deep forest, undulating tea garden, a fast flowing mountain river, serene and small villages. Fishing and boating facilities are available here. It is a nice place for picnics and natural sight-seeing. This lake attracts sizable amount of migratory birds during winter. The beauty of the lake and its surroundings lays a charm that lures a huge number of tourists who visit the place to relax in the lap of nature. November to April is the best time to visit.

This large Lake and wet land was created by the devastating earthquake on June 12, 1897 in Assam. Locals say that Chandubi was a hilly area before 1897, but it caved in, the forest went down and took the shape of a lake. The lake is bestowed with natural beauty. The main feature of the lake is the natural lagoon that has been formed in the lake. The lake offers to its visitors the opportunity to go fishing in the waters of the lake. The administrators of the lake have also provided the tourists with the facilities to go rowing in the calm lake waters. The presence of such provisions makes the Chandubi Lake an ideal tourist destination of Assam.

On New Years Eve, the Chandubi festival starts which is held for about a week. Apart from treating the visitors with traditional Rabha and Garo dance, the organizers arrange for party to those who visit this place for a picnic. The Chandubi festival is an endeavour to draw more tourists to the lake. Locals provide the tourists accommodation in their homes round the year and arrange for boating facilities in the lake at a nominal fare. With little assistance from government in the form of advertisement this lake has the potential of a popular tourist spot in the making.

How to Reach

The lake is easily accessible by road from Adabari, Goalpara and Guwahati. From Guwahati one have to go towards Airport and then up to Mirza Charali (or police point), from there take left turn towards Mirza College and go towards Chandubi lake road. Buses are available up to Mirza but from there private vehicle have to be taken to reach the lake. Scanty food stall near the lake hence it is better to take food along. The government tourist lodge near the lake provides lodging for the tourist.
