The highest court of law in Assam, the Gauhati High Court was established in 1948 after the Government of India Act 1935 was passed. Originally known as the High Court of Assam and Nagaland, but renamed as Gauhati High Court in 1971 by the North East Areas (Reorganisation) Act, 1971.

Gauhati High Court has largest jurisdiction in terms of states in India. Its area of control includes the states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Mizoram.

The Gauhati High Court transacts its business during its working days from 10.30 AM to 1.15 PM during the 1st Session and from 2.00 PM to 4.15 PM in the 2nd Session. The Honorable Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court constitutes the Single, Division and Full Benches.

The principal seat of the Gauhati High Court is at Guwahati in Assam. The court has 3 outlying benches. These are:
1. The Kohima bench for Nagaland state (established on 1 December 1972)
2. The Aizawl bench for Mizoram state (established on 5 July 1990)
3. The Itanagar bench for Arunachal Pradesh state (established on 12 August 2000)

Gauhati High Court plans to set up a museum to showcase the glorious history of the first high court in the Northeast. The museum will come up at the old building of the high court. This decision to set up a museum had been taken by the court after the court’s premises were expanded with the addition of a new building.

Located in the central part of the metropolis of Guwahati, it is accessible from any part of the city. Public transport, private transport both can be availed from the transit points – LGB Airport, Guwahati Railway Station and ISBT bus stand. It is a walking distance from the Railway station.
