The epitome of Hare Krishna Movement, ISKCON or The International Society for Krishna Consciousness is a religious movement of the Gaudiya-Vaishnava sampradaya, a monotheistic tradition within the Vedic and Hindu cultural traditions. The ISKCON Temple in Guwahati is a must-see destination for not only spiritual seekers but also tourists and families. The temple is located on a hillock ‘Sarania Pahar’ in Ulubari Chariali area, 2 km away Guwahati Railway station. The temple can be reached from the main G.S. Road and also via South Sarania. By the side of the post office a steep lane leads to the gate of the temple complex.

The temple is not as opulent as other ISKCON temples across the globe, but the feeling of peacefulness in immense. The idols are as beautiful as one can find in any ISKCON temple. The pristine white exterior of the marble-floored Temple makes it a landmark of the locality. There are idols of Lord Krishna and his consort, both dressed in beautiful attires. The focal point of this temple is a single set of idols of Krishna & Subhadra. The view from the platform behind the temple is lovely; it offers a beautiful panoramic view of the city at sunset. There are also well maintained gardens inside the premises along with a children’s park for the Matrimandir, an Orphanage nearby. There is a flight of stairs leading to the temple.

Situated on a hill top and with few people around the ambiance just enhances the feeling of peace in this location Though you are in the center of the city, yet at the same time above it both literally & figuratively.

Evening is the best time to visit when the temple is filled with Devotees and ‘Kirtan’ is held with full grandeur. Daily routines at this temple include Aarti, chanting, bhajans and Bhagavat Gita discourses. Devotees can attend the prayers irrespective of their religions and can have ‘Prasad’ during mealtime. Huge number of devotees attend Aarti at around noon on sunday which is followed by ‘Maha Prasad’ or Sunday bhogs (meals) for which Rs. 30/- is charged within the Temple. Apart from these Gita classes, personality development and stress management classes are also conducted here. Morning time is also a good time to spend in the calm peaceful and nature atmosphere of the temple. Janmashtami, Jagannath Rath Yatra and Holi are celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm in the temple. During Janmastami around early mid August the temple buzzing with people . With lots of programmes held through the whole eventful week,the street near the temple is filled with vendors and turns into a fair.

One can walk down the side of the temple to see and relax in the lap of nature, in the middle of the busy and fast expanding city. The walk in the temple is like a mini teerth vraman. Situated on a high hill, it is away from the vehicular pollution of Guwahati. ISKCON temple in Guwahati is a must visit for any seeker or believer of any faith. Place is sparkling clean and one can pray at his own pace and time. Nobody will force themselves on you and nor are you bound by any obligation.

A souvenir shop where one can buy ISKCON related badges, bhajan CDs, dresses and Tulsi malas etc. is there within the temple campus. ISKON also provides guest house accommodation for overnight travelers but must be pre-booked.

Gandhi Mandap

Right at the top of the Sarania Hillock, located in the very heart of the city there is Gandhi-mandap, a memorial dedicated to the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi. It was built in year 1969 and was opened to the public in 1970. It displays a comprehensive exhibition on the life of the Mahatma Gandhi, the Great Soul and a library. It is approximately 2 km from the base of the hillock. This is another site where one can go to visit. The tranquil, neat and calm environment will definitely soothe you.

How to Reach

Guwahati Railway Station is 2 kms from the Iskcon Temple. There are numerous hotels suited for every pocket to be found in the Paltan Bazar area. It is a short drive from most of the hotels situated near the railway station. Just few minutes away from the busy railway station i.e. Paltan Bazar crowd this temple is a blessing indeed for transit passengers. Tourists can even walk down or hire a taxi or rickshaw to reach the temple.

Hired and shared taxi and AC bus from Airport can easily bring the tourists here. Same is applicable in case of ISBT (Inter State Bus Terminus). Moreover, Paltan Bazar being a busy hub many public and private transports has its start point here.
