Navagraha Temple

Located on the top of Chitrasal Hill (or Navagraha Hill), housed in a red beehive shaped dome, the Navagraha Temple in Guwahati is an ancient seat of astrology and astronomy. Built by Ahom King Rajeswar Singha in the late 18th century, there are nine Shivalingams in the temple, each representing the nine Celestial bodies and covered with a colored garment symbolic of each of the celestial bodies, with a Shivaligam in the centre symbolising the Sun. It is also known as the ‘Abode of Surya’.

Surya Puja or Sun worship is an ancient practice amongst the Assamese people. A number of other temples are also present within the state for this purpose. Navagraha temple represents the ancient wisdom of a cultural past. One needs to climb some stairs from the road to reach the main shrine. This is an ancient temple that looks old and feels old. Navagraha is one of the temples which has not changed over the decades. There is no light inside the temple and is only lit with diyas but surprisingly you do not need light after some time. The puja offering can be given any time of the day but there is a rush in the morning. Huge number of worshipers comes to the temple. The puja items can be bought from the flower sellers sitting outside the temple. The Pujaris are gentle and perform puja in proper way.

Apart from receiving benediction the temple top offers great view of river Brahmaputra. The hilltop offers a good sunset view of the Brahmaputra. The temple premises provide a panoramic view of the Guwahati city. The serene atmosphere surrounding it with a breath-taking top angle view of the city is mesmerizing. Below the temple there is picnic spot as a spring and water fall is situated.

While visiting Guwahati, Navagraha temple should be visited as it is very good tourist attraction of Assam. It is right at the center of Guwahati with easy access. The best time for visit is from October to April. Navagraha temple can be reached by road from any part of Assam. Nearest railway station is Guwahati Railway Station and the Airport is LGB Airport in Borjhar. From these places one can take both public and private transport to reach the temple.
