Brahmaputra River in Assam flows through Tibet, Arunachal Pradesh (an Indian state) and Assam (an Indian state) through Bangladesh. Its source is the Chemayungdung Glacier which lies on the Himalyan slopes almost 100 km southeast of Lake Mapam in south western part of Tibet. The river flows through almost 1,100 km in the main range of Himalayas in South and Kailas range in the north. The upper course of the river is named the Tsangpo which literally means the purifier. The river is known by several local names of the areas it passes through. The Tsangpo receives several tributaries in Tibet. The river turns to the north and north east after passing Pi in Tibet. It then beautifully cuts through narrow gorges between the hilly massifs of Namcha Barwa and Gyala Peri. It then passes through the Grand Canyon of Tsangpo along the eastern edge of Himalayas as River Dihang before entering Assam in north eastern India. Dihang turns to the southwest and is later joined by two mountain streams called Lohit and Dibang. Almost 1,450 km from the Bay of Bengal, before the confluence, the river is known as Brahmaputra. Brahmaputra literally means Brahma’s son (putra). The river is known for its mightiness in Assam even during the drier months. Through the river’s 700 km run, it is joined by several picturesque streams from Himalaya. To name a few, Sankosh, Manas, Champamati are the prominent ones.
