Srimanta Sankaradev Kalakshetra is a cultural institution situated in the Panjabari area of Guwahati, Assam. It is an impressive display of the various diverse culture and life of the people of Assam, of the glorious past and history of the region. Named after Srimanta Sankaradeva, one of the greatest epitome of integrity of the Indian society of the fifteenth century and unifier of Assam. Initiatives in the field of research, promotion and development of the rich cultural mosaic of the varied diverse ethnic communities inhabiting Assam has also been taken up by this institution which is one of the largest cultural congregation of Northeast Region.

Kalakshetra Complex

The Sankardev Kalakshetra is a major tourist spot in Guwahati. Built in the year 1998, the artistic excellence of not only Assam but also the rest of the north-eastern region is on display in this complex. It houses a museum, an art gallery, an open-air theatre and traditional Vaishnavite temples within the sprawling complex.

The Kalakshetra has several complexes for different acivities. The Central Museum displays articles used by different ethnic groups like Ahoms of Assam. The museum also exhibits several cultural objects of the state within it. The open-air theater that can accommodate 2000 people hosts several cultural programs in its premises. Traditional dance and drama performances are carried out in this theater. This theatre is also given for rent. The Kalakshetra also houses an Artists Village, which is a replica of a traditional village society of Assam. The Sahitya Bhavan is the library, which has a huge pool of rare books and manuscripts. Another section of the art complex houses the Lalit-Kala Bhavan. This is mostly used for exhibitions and workshops on art and culture.

A magnificient view of the hills of Shillong plateau can be seen from the fields of Kalakshetra. The open air Theatre, displays a breath taking view of misty mountainous range of the Khasi Hills which is a regular venue for a wide variety of cultural events and 2000 audience can enjoy the shows from the gallery. The major attraction in the Kalakshetra is an Artistic Village that portrays the village life of Assam in the most liveliest form through life size statues and model thatched huts. The majority of urban children, who are deprived of the experience of a village life due to urbanization, can enjoy the simplicity of rustic life and increase their knowledge of their roots through a virtual tour of the village. A heritage park is also a part of the huge complex of the Shankardev Kalakshetra. A walk through the park gives a feeling of contentment and satisfaction. Beside these various murals on the center’s surrounding walls depicting various war moments, Bihu dances and other Assamese iconic representations are indeed enthralling a sight.

Now a cable car facility is also available inside the park to commute the tourists.Museum named after Bhupen Hazarika is another attraction of Kalakshetra. The Kalakshetra has varied structures and buildings abiding with the ethnic Assamese designs. A replica of the Rang Ghar (an Ahom Amphitheatre in Sivasagar district of Assam), is sighted in the entrance corridor to the main Central Museum.

Ticket prices start from Rs.10 for children (5-14yrs) to Rs.30 for adults, Rs.100 for foreign tourists, Rs.10 for still camera and Rs.100 for video camera.

Timings are 10:00 AM – 7:30 PM, open all days of the week.

How to Reach

This tourist attraction of Assam being part of metropolis is very well connected by road. There are eateries within the sprawling Kalakshetra itself. It is also possible to check out the local handicraft produce and bargain for a good deal within the complex.
